confederate army during the civil war. He enlisted on December
8, 1861 and was assigned to Company B of the 47th Regiment of
Tennessee. The service records state that he was slightly
wounded in battle at Murfreesboro, Tennessee on December 31,
1862. Another record shows where he was issued clothing on
September 5, 1864. After his discharge, he returned home to
marry Miss Sallie J. Walker on November 12, 1866. They had
nine children. three girls (the first two being twins) and six
boys between the years 1867 and 1884. According to Land deed
records from Gibson County, Tennessee (Deed Book #5 - 1873 to
1874 - Page 278), Stephen D. Reeves purchased 160 acres of land
from Kenan and Reena Williams on November 15, 1873. It was
located on the North side of the Forked Deer River. One of the
witnesses to the transaction was J. R. Reeves (may have been
his father or brother). The census records of 1880 show that
Stephen was born in South Carolina. He claimed to be able to
read and write, and that he was a farmer. He died in Gibson
County, Tennessee sometime in 1886. Stephens middle name was
given as Decatur on his son Phillip's Death Certificate.
